At Custom Homes by Modern Structure, we stay ahead of the curve so our customers get the most up-to-date, yet timeless design advice as they go through the homebuilding process.
In this post, we’re breaking down what’s in, and what’s on its way out, when it comes to home design in 2025. Whether you’re planning your dream home or simply exploring the latest trends, this guide will help you make inspired, future-forward choices.
What’s IN in 2025
Even though we’re highlighting some of the top home building and design trends of 2025, the way you design your home is completely up to you. If one or more of these trends don’t suit you, no problem. We want your custom home to be one you’ll be happy with now and into the future.
Trending Color Palettes
A hue we’re noticing everywhere in 2025 are shades of green, especially dark greens. Dark green variations not only add a little drama to a space, it acts as a neutral backdrop and creates a warm atmosphere.
Hues of dark green can go anywhere: your home’s exterior, bedroom walls, accent walls, bathrooms, kitchen cabinets, and more.
Aside from green, other deep and bold colors are on-trend. Dramatic blues are also making a comeback. We suggest pairing a deep green or blue with natural materials like wood, bamboo, and house plants.
Looking for something even more eye-catching? Wallpaper is back. Many homeowners are using creative wallpaper patterns as accent walls in bedrooms, living spaces, offices, and bathrooms.
What colors are OUT? Greys. The ever-so-popular grey walls with grey floors and grey furniture are out. It’s time to spruce things up with more color!
Building Sustainably
Another 2025 home building trend that should always be in style is sustainable building.
A sustainable building, or green building is an outcome of a design philosophy which focuses on increasing the efficiency of resource use — energy, water, and materials — while reducing building impacts on human health and the environment during the building’s life cycle, through better sitting, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal.
Though green building is interpreted in many different ways, a common view is that they should be designed and operated to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment by:
- Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources
- Protecting occupant health and improving employee productivity
- Reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation
Sustainable building is at the forefront of what we do at Custom Home by Modern Structure. How do we do this?
- We build structures responsibly
- We reduce the amount of waste created during construction
- We ensure that water and energy is used efficiently throughout the building’s life
- We focus on reducing waste and pollution during the construction process
- We aim to put families in a home that protects their health
Energy Efficiency
Over the years, homes have become more and more energy efficient. Energy efficiency is a combination of several factors including:
- Where the home is built on the land
- Layout of the home
- Window placement, quantity & quality
- Air sealing techniques
- Insulation quality
- HVAC/Furnace efficiency
- Appliance efficiency
- Quality of the roof
Aside from saving you money on energy bills, building a home that is energy efficient is a whole lot better on the environment.
We put a huge focus on building energy efficient homes in the Evansville, Indiana area. In fact, we are proud to share that we were awarded the Most Energy Efficient Home Award during the 2025 Evansville Parade of Homes. This award means that our home had the lowest HERS rating, better insulation details, and higher performing HVAC systems than any other home in its category.
Kitchen Trends
Your kitchen is the heart of your home. We are willing to bet that your kitchen is used for way more than just cooking. These 2025 design trends will keep your kitchen on-trend and multifunctional for years to come.
- Multi-purpose and secondary kitchens
- Functional layouts
- Craft ice makers for extra-special cocktails and beverages
- Show stopping appliances that work as good as they look
- Outdoor kitchens
- Pull-out drawers for all cabinets keeps items in-reach and more organized
- White oak cabinets
What’s OUT in 2025? Open concept kitchens. Homeowners are now leaning more towards kitchens that aren’t open to a living or dining area, but are more closed off and intimate. But – we still actually like the open kitchen concept…. So it’s entirely up to what you like in your own custom home!

Exterior Design that Catches the Eye
First impressions are important! Your home is no different. The exterior of your home should match your style, while also staying on-trend to help with resale value down the road.
For home exteriors, these trends have become increasingly popular:
- Black trimmed windows for a bold, standout look
- The New American Modern style
- Industrial FarmHouse Style with rustic details
- Low maintenance landscaping /more rocks
- Clean line finishes and trim details
What’s OUT when it comes to exterior home design? Unfortunately folks, the Modern Farm House is no longer on-trend. But if this style is what you love, we’d be happy to help you incorporate aspects of the style into your custom home. Someone in Waco, Texas will be Happy!
Master Bath Trends
Master bathrooms are becoming more luxurious, more spa-like, and more welcoming towards technology.
The biggest trend we’re seeing in 2025, are larger showers/shower rooms with rainfall and multi-jet shower heads. As for tubs, freestanding tubs that make a statement are definitely in.
Indulgent items like heated floors, smart toilets, and touchless faucets make any bathroom a relaxing oasis.
For a more sustainable master bath, we suggest using natural stone or eco-friendly materials and skylights or large windows for natural light and ventilation.
Special Features to Consider
These unique features are also trending in 2025, and can make your home more useful, give it more character, and make it more comfortable.
- Arched doorways, hallways, and kitchen range alcoves
- Mixing light and plumbing fixture colors – like matte black with gold details
- Incorporating metals with patina
- Bolder/ fancier / larger laundry room
- More intimate, cozier spaces have been growing for the past few years
- White oak shelves and trim details
