Custom Homes by Modern Structure Takes Home 3 Hoosier Excellence Awards

Date

The Indiana Builders Association (IBA) is a statewide trade association that represents and supports the health of the homebuilding industry throughout Indiana. Aside from working with local and state governments to keep housing safe and affordable for Indiana residents, the IBA is affiliated with 20 local builders associations across the state.

Every year, members of local builder associations submit completed projects to the IBA for consideration or an IBA Hoosier Excellence Award. The winners of each award are chosen by a panel of building industry professionals and consultants. These experts will carefully evaluate each submission based on various criteria, including innovation, craftsmanship, design, and overall excellence.

Custom Homes by Modern Structure, an Evansville area home building company and member of the Southwestern Indiana Builders Association, is proud to have won three awards for 2024.

Custom Homes by Modern Structure Hoosier Excellence Awards

Below are details from the awards won by Custom Homes by Modern Structure.

Winner: Best Bathroom Remodel: Over $50,000

BEFORE

AFTER

Before the remodel, the master bathroom was stuck in the mid-90s. The homeowners asked us to transform their bathroom into a sleek, modern, spa-like space.

We went with rich, custom Amish cabinets with a smooth and creamy quartz countertop.

Our customers trusted us with the design of a tall linear shower niche and built-in bench. The floor is made of frosted glass penny tiles with a liner drain. The tilework of the shower walls and floor makes it the showpiece of the space.

Just like any other project, we were sure to accommodate the needs of everyone involved. The wife wanted the main floor to have a herringbone pattern, and the husband wanted a large soaking tub, and a TV to watch football.  To keep the space looking clean and contemporary, we installed a sleek framed TV that functions as rotating artwork when not in use.

The bold aqua wall color was a budget compromise the customers had to make as they originally wanted the walls to be all tile. The painted walls make a big statement for the customer’s new primary bathroom.

Winner: Best Room Addition

This homeowner was ready to create the sunroom of their dreams. There were three things she requested – lots of windows and skylights, stamped concrete flooring, and plenty of shiplap.

Once we came up with the design, we did a two-stage demo of the back of the house to minimize weather exposure once we started doing all the main framing. In the end, we blended the existing home with the new addition and gave our customer exactly what she wanted.

We installed windows galore to allow natural light to pass through the sunroom into her formal sitting room. To match the new sunroom, we raised the roof of the existing home about three feet.

We wrapped the sunroom with floor-to-ceiling shiplap and coated everything with cabinet-grade paint for a superb finish throughout.

It was quite a challenge building onto an old farmhouse, but it was rewarding receiving the gracious thank you from our customer as she told us we fulfilled building her dream space.

Winner: Best Overall Home: Under $400,000

Blue Pines Cabin on Pine Lake was built to be a long weekend retreat. Surrounded by trees, the cabin seats on the edge of a 50-acre private lake. This homeowner wanted a place where they could relax and enjoy the nature surrounding them.

The cabin is a post-frame structure, but sits on a large bond-beam foundation and a fully insulated slab that was polished and waxed as the finished floor. The Blue exterior was a bold choice by the wife, and it’s beautiful to look at through the green foliage.

The industrial-style interior finishes highlight raw materials like rainbow-striped poplar native to the area, concrete floors, and countertops. The kitchen looks small but packs a lot of storage, as all the toe-kicks have been converted to additional sliding drawers.

The 16×24 screened patio area holds an area for outdoor cooking with numerous grills and smokers set for all the weekend cooking.

The bathroom is completely lined with Trusscore Panels that are fully waterproof to hold up to years of messy kids and pets.

The 1,700-square-foot cabin has a total of 21 large windows, making it impossible to miss the view. With all the windows in the cabin, we beefed up the insulation for the space with 5″ of open cell for the walls and 7″ for the ceiling.

The second story loft was designed for house guests and flex space. The custom metal railing, heavy-duty stair stringers, black stainless cables, and poplar treads and rails were a must for the customers and highlight the whole space.

There was a lot of thought that went into this cabin to make it unique and one-of-a-kind. The living room has an off-grid pellet stove with an accent concrete heat wall behind it. Galvanized spiral duct work adds to the industrial style.

Since this cabin is set deep into a forest area, city water was going to be costly. Since we are focused on sustainable building, we designed an onsite water collection system. All the water that is collected from the metal roof is directed through a two-stage filtering system and is fed to a 1,200-gallon buried cistern. Then, it is pumped back into the cabin and filtered for regular use.

This was an extremely fun and rewarding project for us to highlight our bold and unique capabilities.
